Semtech XR80 Modular 5G Router
The AirLink XR80 is a rugged 5G router built for both fixed and mobile applications, including SCADA networks, public safety fleets, industrial IoT, and private LTE/5G deployments. It supports CBRS Band 48 and is ideal for high-throughput, always-on connectivity in mission-critical environments.
The XR80 is optimized for deployments that demand flexible configuration, long-term scalability, and strong security — from manufacturing sites and utility substations to emergency response vehicles and retail locations. It’s commonly used for fixed wireless access, remote monitoring, and mobile fleet connectivity across public and private networks. The XR80 supports high-bandwidth use cases in CBRS-based networks and offers upgradable modular expansion via cartridge-based design.
The device features a quad-core ARMv8 CPU and supports a single 5G or LTE Cat 20 modem by default, with expansion capability to dual 5G or 4G/5G. It includes Wi-Fi 6 with 5x4 MU-MIMO, dual SIMs, 3 Ethernet ports (including 1x 5 Gbps), RS-232 serial interfaces, USB-C, and CAN/OBD-II for vehicle diagnostics. Designed for harsh indoor and mobile conditions, the XR80 is IP64-rated and tested to MIL-STD-810G. It runs AirLink OS and is managed via ALMS, with support for edge compute containers and secure VPN connectivity.
The XR80 is available in both LTE Cat 20 and 5G models. This variant includes a 5G modem and supports CBRS Band 48 (n48), along with additional Sub-6 GHz and LTE bands for U.S. and international deployment.
Key Features
Connectivity & Network Support
- Supports CBRS Band 48 and a wide range of LTE and 5G Sub-6 GHz bands, including n77, n78, and n79. Dual SIM slots (Mini-2FF) with Semtech’s Cognitive Wireless enable automatic failover between public and private networks.
- Includes 5x4 MU-MIMO Wi-Fi 6 supports up to 2.4 Gbps theoretical throughput, enabling dual-band operation (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) with up to 128 connected clients per radio and WPA2/WPA3 Enterprise-grade security.
Performance & Edge Compute
- The XR80 delivers up to 4.14 Gbps download and 660 Mbps upload speeds over 5G and includes a quad-core ARMv8 processor, 200 MB RAM (for containers), and 750 MB flash storage. Built-in support for edge computing lets you deploy containerized apps directly on the router.
- Secure networking features include FIPS-compliant VPN with support for 10 concurrent tunnels, IPsec with IKEv1/v2, and full/split tunneling. Firewall throughput reaches 1150 Mbps, and advanced QoS and WAN policy routing are built in.
Environmental & Mounting
- Rugged aluminum housing is IP64-rated and certified to MIL-STD-810G for shock, vibration, and thermal extremes. The XR80 supports temperatures from -22°F to +158°F and is certified for Class 1 Div 2 hazardous locations and EN50155 rail usage.
- Available mounting accessories include DIN rail brackets, panel mounts, and vehicle mounting hardware. All antenna ports use color-coded FAKRA connectors.
Management & Software Ecosystem
- Includes a 1-year AirLink Complete subscription with remote management through ALMS, secure firmware updates, and extended warranty eligibility. Supports optional upgrade to AirLink Premium for fleet-wide reporting and same-day hardware replacement.
- Hybrid Cloud management is available for customers requiring on-premise control with cloud flexibility.
Connectivity Requirements
To operate the AirLink XR80 on CBRS or cellular networks, you’ll need:
SIM Card:
Two Mini-2FF (standard) SIMs provisioned on a private CBRS network or supported carrier such as AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, or FirstNet. The XR80 supports dual SIM failover and WAN policy-based routing.
License or Subscription:
The XR80 includes a 1-year AirLink Complete subscription. After the first year, an active subscription is required for continued access to remote management, firmware updates, and extended warranty services. AirLink Premium is an optional upgrade for fleet-level analytics and advance replacement.
Deployment Support:
Deploying CBRS-capable routers in fixed or mobile environments requires careful planning — including SIM provisioning, antenna selection, local or remote configuration, and environmental considerations.
